Bobby Joe Atkinson, born on September 13, 1941, in Sumter County, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, just days shy of his 84th birthday. Bobby was a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness and spirit.
A proud veteran of the US Army, Bobby served his country with bravery and dedication, in later years recalling his daring experiences jumping from helicopters and digging foxholes behind enemy lines. Bobby's stories of his military days were just one testament to his courageous and adventurous life.
Bobby was a member of Olive Grove Church in Turbeville and was an active member of the Kingstree Moose Lodge, where he formed many lasting friendships and contributed to the community. His love for people and life was evident in every interaction, and he brought warmth and laughter to all who knew him. He was retired from H & S Oil Company in Andrews. He was an avid Gamecock fan and outdoorsman.
Bobby is survived by his loving children, son Tad Atkinson and his wife Sarah of Rock Hill, and daughter Marla Matthews and her husband James of Florence. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Cole Rodgers, Ethan Matthews, Mason Matthews, Emily Atkinson, Morgan Atkinson, and Harper Atkinson. Bobby is also survived by two dear sisters, Sylvia Jean Thomas and Lois Coker, and one brother, J.T. Atkinson.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathryn Jordan Atkinson; his parents, William Thomas and Ethel Morris Atkinson; as well as his siblings Donnie Atkinson, Charles Atkinson, Cecil Atkinson, Ethleen Thomas, Glellan Atkinson, Rhoetta Oliva, and Billy Atkinson.
A graveside service to celebrate Bobby's life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Olive Grove Church cemetery, located at 1440 Olive Grove Road, Turbeville. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Brandon Chan. Following the service, the family will receive guests, where all are welcome to share in memories and support.
