Don Olee Matthews, a cherished resident of Florence, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on October 25, 1945, in Olanta, South Carolina, he lived a life marked by dedication to family and hard work.
Don was educated at Olanta High School where he played and excelled in baseball. He went on to have a fulfilling career as a fabricator at La-Z-Boy for 32 years, where he was known for his craftsmanship and strong work ethic. Beyond his professional life, Don was a devoted family man and loyal friend. For many years, Don enjoyed helping his father and mother on their farm and during his downtime you could find him on Santee. He was a great large mouth bass fisherman and loved taking his daughters, family and friends as much as possible.
He is lovingly remembered by his daughters; Michelle Matthews (Chris) Rosa of Alpharetta, GA, Melanie Matthews of North Myrtle Beach, SC, Cynthia Matthews Earp of Alpharetta, GA. Don also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren; Davis Green (Erin), Mason Green, Madison Earp and Nicholas Earp. His siblings; brother, Mickey (Vivian) Matthews of Effingham, SC; sisters, Francis Rodkey of Fort Wayne, IN, and Betty Sims of Southport, VA.
Don is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Lynn Severance Matthews, his parents Wade Olee and Annie Lou Broad Matthews, his brothers Bill Matthews and Jimmy Matthews, his brother-in-laws Earl Sims and Mike Rodkey.
Don also leaves behind Sister and Brother-in-laws along with nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom he loved dearly.
Family and friends will gather to honor Don’s memory at a funeral service held at Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at the Church one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in the church cemetery following the service.

The family would like to thank Jeannie with Columbia Health Care, Nightingale’s Nursing and Attendant Services and the employees with McLeod Hospice for the wonderful care he received during his illness.
Don will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his sense of humor, great advice and lessons, but most of all, the love he shared with all his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
